René Korten creates paintings that reflect the complexity of the world. He does not seek a depiction of reality, but instead creates an equivalent by allowing natural processes in paint and making resolute interventions. Highly considered decisions are balanced with intuitive actions and partially controllable gestures. The interplay of control and chance, mastery and surrender, intrusion and acceptance leads to layered and charged images. His powerful paintings explore the simultaneity of things, radical connections, and the creative power of friction.
René Korten (1957) has exhibited in numerous galleries, project spaces, and artist initiatives, as well as various museums: Museum Belvedère, Heerenveen (NL), Museum van Bommel van Dam, Venlo (NL), De Pont Museum, Tilburg (NL), IKOB Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Eupen (BE), Vincent van GoghHuis, Zundert (NL), Stedelijk Museum Roermond, Roermond (NL), Stedelijk Museum Breda, Breda (NL), Museo do Douro, Alijó (PT), Stedelijk Museum Aalst, Aalst (BE), Museum St. Wendel, St. Wendel (DE), TextielMuseum, Tilburg (NL), Museum Nagele, Nagele (NL), Museum Jan Cunen, Oss (NL), Kunsthaus Dresden, Dresden (DE), Stadsmuseum Grave, Grave (NL), and South African National Gallery Annex, Cape Town (ZA).
